RESUME 101

The Process of getting hired for any position begins with making a strong first impression. Often that impression comes in the form of a resume. Here are a few tips:

  • SPECIFY YOUR OBJECTIVE – Have an objective tailored specifically to the position for which you are interviewing. If you were interviewing for a Software Sales position, it would not be appropriate to have an objective desiring Medical Sales.
Example- Objective- To obtain a customer service position in the staffing industry.

  • MAKE YOUR WORK HISTORY CLEAR AND CONCISE - A company may look at hundreds of resumes for one position. Great candidates are overlooked every day because their resume doesn’t SIMPLY reflect their successful and stable work history. If you have worked at one company for an extended duration, make sure that point is easily conveyed by a quick scan of your resume. Do not break a company history up by titles or positions.

Keep it Simple!
Companies are looking at a resume to identify:

  • Stable Work History
  • Gaps in Employment
  • Education
  • Related Work History

Does your resume give them a quick simple snapshot of these points?

INTERVIEW 101
So your resume got you in the door- what next?
Follow these simple tips to stand out from your competition.

Pre Interview Tips
Follow these tips to prepare for your interview:

  • Dress for Success- Know the appropriate attire for your interview.
  • Do your Homework- Find out as much information as possible. Research the following:
    • Position
    • Company
    • Industry
  • Timing is Everything- Arrive early to your interview, but not too early. 5-15 minutes is appropriate. Find the facility well before your scheduled interview time.
  • Know the Process- Know the names of your interviewers and the hiring process. Know where to enter the facility, and who to ask for.
  • Create an Objective- Know your goal for the interview. Goals include advancing the process to the next step (get hired for the position, have the next interview scheduled)

Interview Tips
These tips can separate you from the competition.

  • Firm Hand Shake- Exude confidence with a firm, full hand shake.
  • Maintain Eye Contact- Make sure you focus on eye contact to show the conviction of your statements.
  • Find the Positives- People want to hire enthusiastic, positive people. Talk positively about all previous experiences including work history and education. Find and share the positives in your past.
  • Sell Yourself First- Your goal should be to get offered every position you interview for. It is your prerogative to accept it or not.
  • Be Clear About Your Future- Be prepared to share with your prospective employer why you are certain that their position is specifically the position you desire. It is appropriate to include why their company is the company type you desire.

Post Interview Tips
This critical 3rd Phase of the interview process is often the difference between who gets the position.

  • Exit with Rapport- As you leave your interview be prepared to hold a short rapport-building conversation.
  • Follow Up Strategy- After every interview prepare a proactive "next step". Options Include:
    • Follow Up Call
    • Follow Up Card

Don’t simply thank the employer- reiterate why you further feel their opportunity is the right one for you.

  • Be Proactive- If you don’t hear from the employer immediately, DON’T GIVE UP. Use "next step" strategies to convince them you’re the right person for the position.
